  • Finding your mojo by continuously reinventing yourself

    For a few years now, I have been working with business and social leaders, young entrepreneurs, writers and artists and many others seeking to rediscover their mojo. The primary space for this work is Reflections, an offsite programme run at specific times of the year, usually in Uttarakhand. Many participants have benefitted and truly rediscovered their mojo.

    This is the story of one such person, Pritha Sen, who has been a part of Reflections, as a faculty.

    Mojo in the urban dictionary is the quality that fills us with energy, makes us more attractive to people and creates a virtuous cycle that makes us successful. It’s a bagful of invisible charms that one dips into to rejuvenate. When you find your Mojo, you are in that wonderful space where everything about you is in synch. You operate from a deep understanding of Self, follow your Passion and believe you are working towards your Purpose. A pretty tall order you may say and wonder whether it is possible at all. 

    Let me share with you an example of a person who has turned a lot of conventional wisdom on its head and has been exploring, finding and rediscovering her Mojo, each time in a different place, through the many years that I have had the pleasure of knowing her.

    A conventional start with a touch of empathy

    Pritha Sen (58) was a post grad in history who like many other educated women in the pre-liberalisation days became a school teacher. Students loved her, her classes were in demand, yet she found something missing. She decided to explore beyond and trained to teach children with special needs and achieved some firsts in that profession. Circumstances beyond her control put an end to that career but she was not dejected. Instead, quite serendipitously, she was into journalism, discovering much that was happening in the world. Empathetic and equity-driven, it was no surprise then that she made a huge success of an award-winning page she launched in on the social sector. That was when she decided to quit and join the development sector as a consultant specialising in documentation, evaluations and trainings for the social sector. Clients agreed that her work was top quality.

    Side steps and cross steps

    Travelling for work took her to the remotest corners of the country and she explored the history, culture and food (an abiding interest since childhood) of these places. Soon she found the next level of her work, one that is the current buzzword in the social sector lexicon –sustainable livelihoods. She looked closer and found a gold mine in local foods, their histories and age-old recipes that told her about the communities she worked with and the ignored indigenous wisdom on nutrition. She recognised the next important milestone in her life and plunged into it to become part of a movement that is sweeping the globe – returning to one’s roots and identity with healthy regional cuisine. 

    Writing on food developed as an aside and Pritha had soon built a reputation as an authority and food historian. Today, apart from working with everything else she has in the past, she has been one of the forces behind the resounding success of a restaurant brand in two of the most competitive food markets in the country. Recently, she was mightily thrilled about singing with a bluesgrass band from the US at a café in Kolkata.

    This may sound like the story of a confused person. If that were the case, Pritha would not have been able to create so many successes. There was hard work, making new connections and the difficult task of learning new skills involved every single time.

    Let’s unpack these a little more.

    If business as usual is not your thing, don’t be apologetic

    Pritha is truly dancing in her mojo when she sets up new challenges for herself. Not for her the task of dealing with managing and maintaining business as usual for too long. She gets restless. She understands and accepts this aspect of her personality. Combined with the need to be the best at what she does, she has to stretch every time to rebuild her knowledge and skills, drawing heavily on the learnings from her previous experiences. She cannot be one without the other to create better versions of herself each time. One that is rooted in the sum of her past and the addition of the new. We know many amongst us who get bored without fresh challenges but still remain glued to the old and therefore lose their mojo. They would be well advised to explore and find new challenges.

    Keep your interests alive

    Like many among us, Pritha has multiple interests. However, unlike most others, she has never allowed those interests to be buried for too long. Again a great example for all of us with varied interests. You never know where it could lead to.

    Equity is a deeply held belief for her. And she weaves that into almost everything she does. Like teaching children with special needs or bringing the social sector into focus in mainline media or hiring young talented cooks from small town who need backing to make it big, , Purpose is seamlessly built into all that she does.

    Pritha does not think of her life in the boxes that my unpacking here discusses. She lives it in the questions that she asks herself when she experiences a persistent flagging in her interest and in making those difficult choices. She keeps finding her mojo everytime she begins to lose it. You can too. It’s not always that you must have just one goal. Pushing her limits, Pritha has found several and each time passed the test in her own eyes. This last is the most important.

    For those in advertising or design what I am about to narrate will sound very familiar. The deadline looms large and the idea is still a distant dream. The client servicing person is tearing his hair out, the client calls frequently to ask about progress and the creative guys grumble about why the client has to always wake up late. Working through long hours and exhausting schedules, they make it! Not once, not twice but repeatedly.

    Now shift focus to this person, someone we will call Nandoo. We have known him from school days actually – he always studied last minute for his exams but still managed to do quite well. He is good at his job but leaves everything for the last minute. And, he gets it done. Not once, not twice but repeatedly!

    In advertising, design, journalism and other professions there is a belief that people work better under pressure. Then there is Nandoo. He also seems to work better under pressure.

    Is there some merit in this argument or is it one of those myths that perpetuate a system or someone’s habit of procrastinating?

    Pressure = Stress

    We know how continued pressure, physically or mentally is one of the prime reasons behind stress. So if a system seems designed to keep things at a boil all the time can it really lead to better performance? You are probably personally acquainted with someone’s story of wilting under pressure. And then of course there is Burnout – is a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress.

    According to a recent paper released in Science Direct stress improves ‘prospective memory’ defined as “the planning, retention, and realization of intentions”. In the experiment conducted, it was found that those who had been subjected to stress prior to the task, were better at the ‘performance’ stage of the task than those who were not subjected to stress.

    So what it does prove is that a certain amount of stress may actually be good for you. It helps to keep you alert, competitive, focused and provides motivation. However, when it becomes excessive and prolonged, it is usually harmful and often creeps up without the affected person realising it.

     

    In today’s world, pressure is a given. Unless you are a Nandoo, you need to find your ways to destress frequently and seek help when you feel the need. Some exercise, good friends, a hearty laugh, love…whatever it takes.

  • Making the Right Choice for your Second Career – Mastering the Second Innings – Part 3

    Calling right and then taking the right decision

    The Second Innings gives us a chance to lead a more purposeful existence. Purposeful does not refer to only altruistic and missionary goals . It would certainly include ‘providing healthcare for children from marginalised sections of society’ (if that is what you really want to do) but  also apply for ‘teaching life skills to children and young adults from affluent families’ (if making sure children from elite schools have a more balanced upbringing is what gets you). This is not about judging your purpose but about really identifying it, evaluating it for yourself and pursuing it. It is about being the best version of you. It is the opportunity to lead a Great life and not just a Good life.

    Making the right choice about the thing to do for your Second Innings needs a balance of dreaming, pragmatism and self awareness.

    Key Questions to Ask Yourself

    1. What are you really Passionate about?

    Write down what you believe you are really passionate about. Be honest with yourself. What really excites you? What motivates you to get up in the morning?

    It could well be ‘running’, ’exploring new places’, ‘making people happy’, ’seeing children enjoy themselves’, ‘augmented reality’ ‘cooking different kinds of food’ or ‘playing the blues’ or ‘making a difference to people’s lives’.

    Also understand that passions may develop and evolve over time. It is quite possible that what you were passionate about a few years ago no longer excites you. The opposite may also be true, that your passion for something has only grown over time.

    If you come up with more than one thing then eliminate until you have only one.

    2. What are you very good at?

    The key concept here is skill. What set of skills can you offer? What are you good at? What do you know a lot about?

    Don’t confuse this with natural talent or ability. Yes, it would be nice if you were as good at dribbling a ball as your parent. But skills can be learnt and developed as well. You have probably acquired a number of skills through life that come in very handy.

    Sharp and clear articulation is important. ‘Sales’ is too general. ’Selling to high net worth individuals’ is  more specific and likely to yield better answers.

    3. What will drive your economic engine?

    The key idea here is marketability. What will other people pay you for? What skill could earn you a sustainable income? Point to note here – the important criteria for sustainable income is in how you define it at that time. In my research I have seen that successful second innings players say that  earning more and more is not how they defined success and sustainability often got defined very differently from the first innings paradigms (more on that in future articles). Marketability, remains the important point.

    Many of the skills you have, like “‘touching the tip of your nose with your tongue” or ‘playing the nose trumpet” are entertaining but not very marketable.

    Look to see if your skill enriches people’s lives or addresses a pain point in any way.

     

    The Sweet Spot

    To be able to pursue your passion and find the match with your abilities is the ‘dream’ thing to do (refer to figure below). You can wake up every morning, do what you are doing and never feel as though you are ‘working’!

    If you do not have any concerns about money over the long term, this could be the thing for you to do.

    If your passion is to ’make children happy’, and you are a great sales person to high net worth individuals (HNIs), go ahead and raise funds to get parks built.

    If you had to earn from this, then you would have to take into consideration #3 as well.

    When you have a skill for which people are willing to pay, you have a ‘job’ (refer to figure below). Selling to HNIs will get you a job with a bank, a real estate company, an insurance company and many others. Most people find themselves in this space. This is very often what our First Innings is about. Sometimes it may even be something that we were ‘passionate’ about at one point in time and then things changed.

    There is another very seductive choice that can be confusing at times. Consider this example – you love music and many friends tell you that you should start of something on your own. You certainly enjoy it much more than the CEO job in a media company you hold right now.  You do gigs in pubs whenever time permits and there is a loyal fan following that comes to listen to you sing. You dream of starting a nightclub with great music, food and conversation. Will it work? Do you have the skillets required to run a nightclub? Do you understand hospitality and the food business? Of course you can acquire these skills. Until you do, your passion, that people pay money for, is best pursued as a hobby (refer to figure below).

    The banker who had great experience of taking things to scale and was passionate about helping children and young adults learn life skills found it. He is a founder of a company that runs children’s camps. His partners had deep experience of running these camps. He had the experience of making it into a big business. From a one camp operation it is now 6 camps and probably the No 1 brand in ‘adventure based experiential learning’ for children. It is a meld of the passion, skills and economics and for him it represents a ‘Purposeful Career’(refer to figure below).

    Then there is the ex marketing head of a sports good MNC who loved running. He started a business that uses running events as part of a company’s CSR/marketing/employee engagement activities.

    Yet another person I know, who is now in her Third innings, is a fantastic cook and accomplished researcher/writer. She segued from a pure research/writing career into doing special ‘heritage’ and ‘ethnic’ food experiences. She partners with people who have hospitality and business risk taking abilities and is the celebrity chef who sets the menu, does special events around the history of the food and so on. She is also running a weekend restaurant to gain experience of the business end.

    Here are a few caveats:

    1. You may have a really clear idea of what you want to do. You are very sure about it. It may not fit in with everything on this graph. Go ahead and give it a shot. There are many things that can be learnt as you go along. Start ups are finding that out all the time.

    2. There may be more than one thing that you want to do. If you have put it through all the tests and still can’t decide, be practical, do the easier one.

    3. Be brutally honest about your skills. A good measure of a skill is when you have had repeated feedback from different sources acknowledging that skill.

    4. Sometimes you may not know what you want to do but are clear on what you do not want to do. That is also fine, it helps eliminate options.
